The Australian Standard Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course, delivered by accredited Mental Health Movement facilitators, provides nationally accredited peer support capability for designated workplace champions who may be the first point of contact for colleagues experiencing mental health challenges.

Built on evidence-based practice, MHFA equips participants with the confidence and practical skills to recognise signs of mental ill-health, respond appropriately and guide individuals toward professional support. A 2018 meta-analysis published in PLOS ONE found MHFA training significantly improves mental health knowledge, reduces stigmatising attitudes and increases supportive behaviours toward people experiencing mental health problems.

Participants receive the official MHFA Manual and a 3-year MHFA Accreditation Certificate.

For best-practice workplace capability building, MHFA is most effective when combined with Frontline Mental Health Skills Training as part of a layered organisational approach to mental health support.

The Australian Standard Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Refresher Course, delivered by accredited Mental Health Movement facilitators, renews accreditation and strengthens the skills and confidence of workplace MHFAiders to support colleagues experiencing mental health challenges.

Grounded in evidence-based practice, the refresher revisits key principles, reinforces practical response skills, and ensures participants stay up to date with current best-practice approaches to recognising, responding to and referring individuals to appropriate support.

Upon completion, participants extend their MHFA Accreditation Certificate for a further 3 years.

The refresher plays an important role in maintaining a confident, consistent peer-support network within organisations as part of a broader workplace mental health strategy.

Tier 4: Leaders

This tier builds leadership capability to identify, assess, document and manage psychosocial risk while enabling leaders to respond, escalate and lead supportive conversations in line with Work Health and Safety obligations.

Psychosocial Risk & Supportive Leadership Skills

Who's it for

Senior leaders, leaders, supervisors and managers involved in psychosocial risk management and mental health response, particularly in safety-critical and operational environments.

Format

In-person or virtual training, hands-on activity/scenario-based training

Group size

Up to 20 participants per session

Investment

Starting from $450 per person + GST

Sessions in this tier:

This program builds practical leadership capability to identify, assess, document and manage psychosocial risk in the workplace, while equipping leaders to respond appropriately, escalate concerns and hold structured supportive conversations using the S.U.P.O.R.T framework.

Unlike traditional leadership training that stops at awareness or EAP referral, Mentally Safe Leaders is built around the real WHS obligations leaders are required to meet in practice.

Leadership behaviour is one of the strongest predictors of psychosocial risk, directly influencing workload, role clarity, support, recognition and team culture. This program translates those responsibilities into clear, applied leadership actions.

What’s covered:

  • Psychosocial risk identification, assessment and control
  • WHS responsibilities and due diligence requirements
  • Work design, consultation and documentation
  • Supportive leadership conversations (S.U.P.O.R.T framework)
  • Identifying behavioural change, risk and fit-for-work concerns
  • Escalation pathways and crisis response

Built-in capability and implementation support:

  • Pre and post capability assessment
  • Final competency check
  • 30/60/90-day implementation support
  • Practical leader tools and personalised action plan

Why it matters:

WHS laws across Australia now require psychosocial hazards to be managed with the same rigour as physical risks. Aligned to Safe Work Australia’s Model Code of Practice and ISO 45003, this program is designed to help organisations evidence leadership capability in practice, not just in policy.
