The Race Against Suicide | Bringing the Illawarra Community Together for Mental Health

Marty Haynes interviews Dan Hunt, Chloe Hackett, and Toby Dawson at The Race Against Suicide Raceday 2025

Earlier this year in June, the Illawarra community came together for an event unlike any other, the inaugural Race Against Suicide Race Day at Kembla Grange Racecourse. More than 2,000 people attended to unite around a shared purpose to raise awareness, celebrate resilience and support those affected by suicide.

We were proud to be part of this landmark event. Our CEO & Co-Founder Dan Hunt, shared insights on mental health, his lived experience and the importance of community led initiatives during the events official panel discussion.

Celebrating Life & Community Impact

The day was not only a celebration of life, but also a powerful demonstration of the impact communities can have when they come together. From the Man Walk and Women Illawarra marquees to activations hosted by the Illawarra Hawks and St George Illawarra Dragons, attendees had the opportunity to engage, learn and connect with mental health resources in a welcoming and supportive environment.

By the end of the event, an impressive $38,270 had been raised and is planned to be distributed among local service providers, community groups, support organisations and charities dedicated to reducing the impact of suicide.

The Illawarra Turf Club, the organisers of the event have announced the Race Against Suicide will become a permanent fixture on their calendar, ensuring this momentum continues for years to come.

Why Suicide Prevention Matters

Suicide prevention is a complex and urgent issue that requires more awareness. It demands action, community involvement and accessible support. Events such as the Race Against Suicide not only raise crucial funds but also create safe spaces for conversations to reduce stigma and strengthen local networks that save lives.

For workplaces, leaders and communities the message is clear, mental health is everyone’s business. Supporting initiatives such as this, sharing resources and prioritising wellbeing in daily life can make the world of difference between someone receiving help or going without.

Turning Awareness Into Action

At Mental Health Movement, we are committed to partnering with communities, workplaces and organisations to turn awareness into action. Whether through events, workplace programs or public education, every conversation counts. Together, we can create mentally healthy and psychologically safe communities where every life is valued.
